This week we are talking about burnout. Specifically the type of burnout we experience from the hidden messages that we receive as veterinarians.
Internalized messages like we have to save every pet. We cannot turn a client away. It is my job to make sure that every animal is seen. To be a good doctor, I need to place the needs of everyone else and every animal out there above the needs of myself. To be valuable and worthy I need to say yes when I really want and in some cases need to say no.
Often these ideas are presented to us as being noble and good. And we are awarded these metaphorical "Badges of Honor" for coming in when we're sick. For working when we have a family emergency. For always saying yes. For constantly staying late. And even for accepting salaries and wages that do not support our lives.
But beside these metaphorical badges - what do we actually have to show for all our sacrifice?
Because the truth is, at the end of our lives, there is no badge of honor for being burned out.

Ep 43: Poo Poo Parade - Blame

Thursday Feb 29, 2024

Thursday Feb 29, 2024

In this week's episode of the Daring DVM Podcast we are examining our Poo Poo Parade Participant #3 - Blame.
The sneaky part about blame is that it feels really good in the moment to transfer responsibility away from yourself to something external, like another person or the situation that you're in.
It can also feel good to transfer the responsibility of your experience to something that happened in the past. And to make something else or someone else carry the burden of how you feel for something that happened.
But this is actually one of the worst things that you can do to yourself!
Because when you assign responsibility to something external to you, you are giving all of your power away.
Join Dr. Amy this week as we discuss:
The difference between placing blame and assigning responsibility.
The difference between being a victim and being in a victim-mindset.
Why and how blaming things external to you (people, the past, your current circumstance) disempowers you.
How blame is a nervous system adaptation that in the moment feels as if it is keeping us safe, but in the long run is preventing us from creating the life that we truly want to live.

In this episode I’ll cover the symptoms of indifference.
Why indifference sabotages your desires.

Thursday Feb 15, 2024

As we move through the month of February, we are starting a 4 part series on the sneaky, often overlooked emotions that keep us stuck.
They often wear the disguises of other emotions. 🥸
Or they pretend to be useful and necessary when they are not. 🤥
And if you don't know they are creeping in the background, it can be very difficult to get yourself unstuck and to create the change that you want to see in your own life.

To kick-off our Poo Poo Parade, we are going to start with one of the most detrimental emotions that we can experience - Self-Pity!
It’s something that most of us have felt, probably more than once in our lives.
BUT
Self-pity is self-sabotage!
It stops so many of us from taking action.
It robs us of our accomplishments.
It prevents us from being mentally strong.
And it keeps us stuck in Poo Poo Energy which ultimately keeps us stuck in our lives!
And sadly, most of the time, we don’t even know that we’re indulging in this useless emotion.
So this week I’m discussing how you can dramatically improve your life by kicking the habit of feeling sorry for yourself.

Dare to Dream

Dr. Amy Grimm is a veterinarian, certified life coach, anti-burnout advocate and founder of Daring DVM Coaching and host of the Daring DVM Podcast. She is on a mission to reshape mental health in the veterinary field by inspiring others and teaching them how to create a healthy mindset and become resilient AF.

She has served in industry, public health, research, private practice, and was a Medical Director of a companion animal hospital for several years, before making the leap into entrepreneurship and coaching.

It was through her own struggles with burnout and life-work balance that Dr. Amy discovered coaching and realized the profound positive effects in her own life. Her own transformation inspired her to become a coach herself, so that she could help others who are struggling, just like she once was.

Today she coaches busy, burned-out professionals and helps them transform their lives and fall in love with their careers again. She also still does the doctory things she loves by providing HVHQSN and surgical relief services. Dr. Amy and her fiancé live in Grass Valley, CA. They enjoy everything outdoorsy, including backpacking, bike-packing, peak-bagging, running ultras, and racing on their tandem mountain bike. They share their home with their derpy Catahoula-Aussie-mix, Jake, and elderly entitled Pug, Berkels.

"I love who you are, and even more than that, I love who you are becoming.

Dare to dream."
