In this episode of the Daring DVM Podcast, we're diving into the importance of setting your own agenda and defining success on your own terms.
Too often, we find ourselves chasing goals offered to us by others, and following a suggested career path that may not always serve us best. We continue to work hard, believing that what we are doing will get us to where we want to go, but because we aren't the ones setting our own definitions for success, we end up feeling dissatisfied, exhausted and even burnt out.
And what's worse is that we think the only way for us to feel better is to quit the profession completely! Even though there are so many good reasons we chose vet med in the first place. 💔
In this episode we're talking about
Expectations for new graduates
Setting boundaries around the time your shift ends
Why it is never necessary to go home and worry about the day's cases
Tools to help you advocate for yourself when your agenda differs from that of your boss or employer

Last week I discussed the topic of functional freeze, how this plays out in your life, and how it can trick you into believing you are burned out.
This is important to know because
if you are tired of going through the motions,
if you are struggling to regain joy, purpose, connection and meaning in your work and in your life,
if you are always exhausted, even after you take a break
and you want to start feeling better NOW,
then you need to have the correct tools and strategies to do so!
And recovering from functional freeze requires a different approach than recovering from burnout.
So this week I’m discussing how to get out of functional freeze, and back into your life!
Also, don’t forget to email me (vetcoach@daringdvm.com) for a free resource to help you overcome functional freeze and get you on your way to thriving again. 💖

Are you actually burned out?
Maybe not.
Many of the people I coach, when asked to describe what they mean when they say that they feel “burned out”, actually end up describing something else.
They will tell me that they feel as if they are just going through the motions. They no longer derive joy, satisfaction or purpose from their career or in their lives. They are constantly exhausted, even when they try to decrease their workload or take time off.
From the outside, they appear fine. They are doing the things expected of them at work and at home. But on the inside, they feel numb, almost robotic, and like they are losing touch with their work, their relationships and even themselves.
This week I am discussing the difference between burnout and functional freeze. And if you’re someone who thinks you may be burning out and feels like you are just functioning on autopilot, then this episode is for you.
You will learn:
What burnout is and, more importantly, what burnout is not.
How burnout is different from the state of freeze (as in fight, flight or freeze)
And how these (burnout and freeze) are both different from functional freeze
I will also share how you can figure out if you are in a state of functional freeze, what you can do to get out of it, and give you a free resource to help you recover. 💖

When we prolong decisions we end up with multiple unmade decisions hanging over us. These unmade decisions are left nagging in the back of our minds. And over time, these unmade decisions can lead to overwhelm, exhaustion and burnout.
This week as we explore the reasons why we leave decisions unmade, how this drains our energy, why it makes future decision-making more difficult, and why this kind of debt keeps us stuck. I'll also share some tips on how to make decisions that serve you, and what to do when things aren't going the way you planned.

What if the reason you are experiencing such high levels of daily stress isn't due to what you think..?
What if you have a sneaky, silent saboteur?
One that you may not even recognize as being a part of your life...
The truth is, many veterinarians and high-achieving professionals fall victim to this personality trait. Yet we often don't even realize what we are doing.
In this week's episode, we are discussing the intricacies of perfectionism!
What you'll learn in this episode:
Why perfectionist tendencies are so common among veterinarians.
Where perfectionism comes from.
How it affects all areas of our life.
And why it never works!
I also share my coaching strategies for overcoming it and learning to accept yourself where you are.

It’s no secret that veterinarians and veterinary professionals suffer from higher rates of anxiety, pessimism, and poor mental health compared to other professions.
And most of us think we know why… but most of us are wrong.
A lot of the clients I work with, on top of feeling anxious (or even burned out or borderline depressed), have a lot of confusion and shame about why they feel that way. They think that their brains are broken or that there’s something wrong with them and it can’t be fixed.
Thankfully, they’re wrong.
There’s a specific set of reasons why we are anxious. In this episode, I go through these reasons and explain why your veterinary doctor brain works the way it does and why knowing this is important if you want to reduce your stress levels and create a better work experience.
What You’ll Learn From this Episode:
What veterinary “doctor brain” is and how it differs from the brains of people in other professions.
Why your doctor brain tends to spin out of control and create unnecessary stress and anxiety.
The real reason why veterinary professionals are stressed out (it’s not quite what you think).
How the pressure of professional responsibility and the competitive nature of our careers contributes to our anxiety.
Why there is nothing inherently wrong with you or your brain.
And how your thinking can be changed.
PLUS a downloadable PDF workbook to help you get started in taming your anxiety 💗

Dare to Dream
Dr. Amy Grimm is a veterinarian, certified life coach, anti-burnout advocate and founder of Daring DVM Coaching and host of the Daring DVM Podcast. She is on a mission to reshape mental health in the veterinary field by inspiring others and teaching them how to create a healthy mindset and become resilient AF.
She has served in industry, public health, research, private practice, and was a Medical Director of a companion animal hospital for several years, before making the leap into entrepreneurship and coaching.
It was through her own struggles with burnout and life-work balance that Dr. Amy discovered coaching and realized the profound positive effects in her own life. Her own transformation inspired her to become a coach herself, so that she could help others who are struggling, just like she once was.
Today she coaches busy, burned-out professionals and helps them transform their lives and fall in love with their careers again. She also still does the doctory things she loves by providing HVHQSN and surgical relief services. Dr. Amy and her fiancé live in Grass Valley, CA. They enjoy everything outdoorsy, including backpacking, bike-packing, peak-bagging, running ultras, and racing on their tandem mountain bike. They share their home with their derpy Catahoula-Aussie-mix, Jake, and elderly entitled Pug, Berkels.
"I love who you are, and even more than that, I love who you are becoming.
Dare to dream."
